TSA Laptop Rules

As most airline travelers are aware, the TSA rules for laptop computers are as follows:

1. Remove the laptop from the carrying case.
2. Put the laptop in a separate tub by itself prior to the laptop entering the x-ray machine.

From personal experience, I can say 99 times out of 100 the TSA screeners permitted the laptop strap to remain attached to the laptop when being analyzed by the x-ray machine, but, like anything else, there were exceptions. I contacted the TSA to get their position on the use of the Safe-Clik-N-Grip® Laptop Strap in the laptop screening process, and this was their reply,

"Since no metallic material is used in the construction of the laptop strap, the strap is safe to travel through the airport x-ray machine while attached to the laptop, as long as the laptop is placed in the required tub. Even though there is no requirement to detach the strap assembly from the laptop prior to the laptop entering the x-ray machine, the TSA screeners, at their discretion, may insist the strap assembly be detached from the laptop."

The reason I included the above statement is I do not want to give the false impression the strap is endorsed by the TSA, and a person would never be required to detach the strap during the screening process. Although the strap is constructed of material such that it could go through the x-ray machine without incident, safety is paramount to convenience, and in those instances where the TSA screener requests the strap be detached from the laptop, it is a simple process to “re-velcro” and “re-buckle” the strap around the laptop after the tub exits the x-ray machine.
